Seeing the Future of Maintenance Through Google Glass™
From the beginning, we’ve dreamt about radically and unquestionably disrupting the maintenance industry. We imagine what life would be like if “x” and “y” existed, dream of better work environments, more efficient technology, and a higher standard. More than that, we dream of giving others not only the opportunity to believe in better maintenance, but of giving people the tools to realize those goals. Right now, Labs is dreaming of making maintenance portable, accessible, and wearable. Our eyes are set on the one-and-only wonder device Google Glass, and how it can work as a platform for Fiix.
The Yellow Brick Road
In our drive to create an easier and simpler platform for Maintenance Management, Fiix has taken several steps toward a brighter future. The first step was a maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) marketplace tool that lets you automatically populate your equipment and parts databases using information from millions of items in leading MRO parts databases. No more writing down make, model, and barcode. If an asset is available in the catalogues, and it probably is, then adding it to your CMMS is just a click away.
After that came our Mobile CMMS, a portable version of the CMMS for bringing management into the workflow instead of after it. Without the need to return to a desktop every time a piece of equipment breaks down or a work request is needed, time saved multiplies and issues are tracked the moment they’re found. Better yet, with the mobile application on-boarding was made even easier. Take a picture, auto-populate the data, and an asset is made while you walk around the floor, adding one asset after another to your CMMS. Still, it wasn’t enough. Creating assets might be easier than ever, but there’s more to maintenance than that.
Pushing forward, Fiix then decided to reform the management side of maintenance. We set out to directly connect our CMMS to other enterprise management software. One prime example is our integration with NetSuite’s resource management ERP. The development team created a seamless, one-click solution that syncs our asset management and purchase request functionality with NetSuite’s purchase management system. Today, we’re continuing to innovate, most recently partnering with ZenduIT, a partnership that will bring fleet management to a whole new level as GPS tracking data gets integrated into the Fiix, real time. That means the CMMS can take that actionable data and automatically trigger work orders and preventative maintenance. Labs has also spent this summer discovering ways to fully take advantage of triggerable work orders. By using web browsers, an Arduino, and finally a Raspberry Pi, Labs succeeded in creating an attachable, self-contained system which both takes meter readings and sends them directly to Fiix, creating the first, and fastest, response for preventative and reactive maintenance. So what’s next?
Google Glass is the next step. With the new revision of Glass being aimed solely at the enterprise market, it was only a matter of time before a major CMMS application included a working Glass app. Not surprisingly, Fiix took the lead, releasing their Fiix for Glass application, a handsfree solution to maintenance management.

Fiix for Glass is an open source project which aims to make the CMMS present at absolutely all times. By making the application wearable and voice controlled, not only is Fiix for Glass capable of being used while a technician is busy with their hands, but it also makes the CMMS visible to the technician at all times – right from their glasses. No logging onto a computer, or fumbling with a phone. How simple is that? Fiix for Glass means a technician’s workflow can be monitored as it happens, and the knowledge of what needs to be done next is always in the corner of their eye.
Better yet, with Fiix for Glass users can create work requests in seconds just by speaking to the app, get the latest equipment meter readings, create new assets on the fly, and figure out who was assigned to a work order task that still hasn’t been done yet. Technician’s will also be able to see what maintenance has the highest priority at a glance, take pictures of completed work and close work orders when they’re done, all hands free. Fiix for Glass provides all of the essentials of the CMMS for any maintenance staff, wrapped in a clean and simple package that’s always within reach. The application takes the complexity out of maintenance management like nothing else before it.
The Wizard Behind the Curtain
If you have a pair of Google Glass and a Fiix professional package or higher, you can test out the Fiix for Glass prototype yourself and customize it. The Fiix for Glass application is a beta product and an example of the direction we’re heading in. The future is fast approaching, and with it comes a huge amount of technology just waiting to be harnessed. With handsfree maintenance management, keeping track of what’s being done has been made easy, and will be made easier still as Fiix continues to leverage the latest connected hardware and the power of “the cloud”. Technology is getting smarter, so why shouldn’t maintenance?
