Say, for instance, you’ve just been assigned a critical Work Order. In the age of modern smartphones, you can configure your email client so you receive an email immediately on your smartphone. However, you may have data roaming switched off or you may not have a smartphone. A question we’re often asked at Fiix tech support is,
“Is there a way to send CMMS notifications as text (SMS) messages to your phone?”
Luckily, it may still be possible to still get notified the old fashioned way through a nifty SMS text feature provided by your phone plan carrier.
Most mobile phone companies will allow you to send SMS (text) messages to cell phones via email, although it isn’t widely known. When you sign up for a mobile phone plan, an email address is created that links to that phone number. It’s usually in the format of “your phone number”@”carrier’s sms gateway”.com. Check with your carrier to see if Email to SMS is available.
Eg: If my phone provider is Verizon and my phone number is 917-123-4567, then emailing the following address will forward the message via SMS to your phone:
9171234567@vtext.com
To ensure that CMMS notifications are sent to this number, I can configure my account in a number of ways:
Option 1: Set up a rule in your Email to forward on any messages from mailman@macmms.com to your SMS text email address:
Option 2: Set your email in Fiix to your SMS text email.. This means you won’t get any email notifications.
